The Florida Panthers celebrated a historic second consecutive Stanley Cup victory with a, let’s face it, very impressive 5‑1 win over the Oilers in Game 6. It was hard to watch, but the better team won and that’s how it works. Right? Right.
So back to Tuesday, the celebratory euphoria quickly resulted in some ‘unexpected damage’ to Lord Stanley’s Iconic Cup. Reports confirmed the trophy sustained a cracked bowl and dented base during the on-site festivities in Sunrise and subsequent partying at a Fort Lauderdale beach bar. The Hockey Hall of Fame has assured fans the “Keepers of the Cup” will have it restored ahead of Sunday’s parade. Can you imagine if The Cup could talk!? What an auto-biography that would be.
Despite the ‘unexpected incident’, it happens. It’s part of the Cup’s legacy. It’s 131 years old and has been around. The trophy has been in swimming pools, dropped in bonfires, the Atlantic Ocean, and dropped a LOT. Plus the 37 pound trophy is made of silver and a nickel alloy…which is a relatively soft metal. So the damage is not surprising, but still crazy to hear about.
The Cup will be hoisted once again at the celebratory parade for the Panthers in Tampa on Sunday.
