Don’t worry, I didn’t know what it was either.
BUT I do know that I love Diet Coke and Red Wine and apparently when you mix them together, it’s an amazing cocktail!
Calimocho, is like…..the delightfully rebellious cousin of sangria. Born out of the Basque Country of Spain during the 1970s, this drink became a hit among young party-goers looking for something cheap, cheerful, and surprisingly tasty. What started as a solution to mask the taste of not-so-great wine turned into a beverage everyone loved with a cult following. And they seem to be having their moment here in North America lately. I’m seeing them pop up all over my social feeds.
There’s something strangely unserious about Calimocho—like the friend who shows up to the party with mismatched socks but somehow pulls it off. It’s unfussy, easy to make (equal parts wine and cola, over ice, maybe a lemon wedge if you’re feeling fancy), and perfect for casual hangouts, rooftop get-togethers, or spontaneous dance parties in your kitchen. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s exactly the point.
Despite its simplicity, Calimocho carries a kind of underdog coolness. Sure, it may raise a few eyebrows from those wine purist friends of yours, but that’s part of its rebellious charm. It reminds us that sometimes the best things in life come from breaking the “rules” and mixing what you love—literally. So grab a glass, give it a stir, and toast to the magic of unexpected combos.
